First blog post!!!

Where to begin.

Last week I was able to see Sting and Peter Gabriel on their Rock, Paper, Scissors tour. Wow. I never thought I would be able to see my idol Vinnie Colaiuta in person, let alone playing for Sting. The whole night was a compilation of hits from both artists and I couldn't stop grinning the whole time. It was arguably the best show that Edmonton will see for a long time. I was also able to see James Taylor with Steve Gadd on the kit not too long ago, which was also a spectacular show of musicianship. Gadd, Jimmy Johnson, Luis Conte (who also is currently playing with Toto), Blue Lou Marini (of Blues Brothers fame), Michael Landau. What more can you say.

In June I graduated with my second bachelor's degree. That makes 9 years of university - I think I'm burnt out on the whole school thing now. The last four years at MacEwan University were incredible. I was fortunate enough to be able to perform with some of the best young musicians around on a daily basis in many different settings - Big Band, Showcase Band, guitar and vocal ensembles, recitals, coffeehouses. You name it.

Recently I was honoured with the Fred Sherratt Award, nominated by the staff at the university. There were 11 other recipients from 11 other universities across the country and we were all provided transportation to Toronto to attend a reception and to meet some important people in the music industry. From executives at SOCAN to label reps at Universal Music Canada to Gavin Brown (HOLY CRAP), it was an unforgettable experience. There's a little article here and another one here if you want to read a little about it. Thanks so much to Bell Media and MusiCounts.

I also began playing with a band called vera (www.veramusic.ca) early in the year, and we've been writing and demoing some new music. Playing with the guys in vera is awesome. They are some of the best young players from around Edmonton. It's a little tricky trying to play gigs with them as I'm still doing the freelance thing (gotta pay the bills somehow!) but we're hoping to have some sort of album or EP recorded and released in the next year or so.

In the coming months there are quite a few shows, which you can find here, and I'll be starting to teach in September again. If you want a lesson, give me a shout here

That's it for now! I'm going to try to post something on here every once in a while, whether anyone reads it or not! Get out and support live music!
